Just 23, Ryder brings a range and vocal maturity of someone twice her age. She also sings any genre with ease-from jazz and blues to country, rock and easy listening. Here, Ryder leans toward folk and covers a host of Canadian and international songwriters from a bygone era, from a minimalist approach to Leonard Cohen’s “Sisters of Mercy” to giving the Bob Dylan/Rick Danko co-write a new lease with a funky-folk version of “This Wheel’s on Fire.” The record ends with three Ryder originals, including a co-write with Randy Bachman. Overall, Ryder shows her voice is as timeless as those songs and artists she covers.
