Studio album number four from the avant-garde jazz trio finds them in typically loose limbed form, deconstructing pop, country and rock from a diverse array of acts (Wilco, the Bee Gees, Nirvana, Yes and Heart among others), but now with the addition of vocalist Wendy Lewis. She helps grounds them as her husky voice finds lyrical nuances in Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” and a nearly unrecognizable molasses tempo version of Roger Miller’s “Lock, Stock and Teardrops” that strips the tune down to its torchy roots. And when have you last heard a jazz combo, or anyone else, cover the Flaming Lips?
