Ex- Be Your Own Pet front-woman Jemina Pearl is giving a nod to a legend on her upcoming solo debut that bodes well for it’s legitimacy; she announced this week that the first single off the album is a duet with Iggy Pop.

Entitled “I Hate People”, that single is available for streaming here. Based around catchy, raw guitars, Pearl’s sweet but slightly unhinged vocals perfectly fit the razor-in-a-candy-apple lyrics. Iggy Pop seems like a particularly appropriate pairing for Pearl; he grew to be a rock legend partly through his manic stage presence and willingness to sacrifice his body mid-performance, a trait carried on by Pearl during her wildly physical shows with BYOP. One can easily imagine the two in the studio trading war stories of on-stage injuries.

The new LP, Break It Up, is due out October 6 on Ecstatic Peace/Universal. Other artists lending their considerable abilities to the album include Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and TV on the Radio’s David Sitek. Producing credits go to John Agnello, who previously worked with the Hold Steady.

It is unclear to what extent the album covers Be Your Own Pet’s acrimonious 2008 breakup. Pearl told Pitchfork previously that “I’ll probably talk about [the breakup] eventually, but right now it’s too fresh.”

BYOP, a collection of young, talented Nashville natives, drew buzz and applause for their venomously catchy punk songs and out-of-control playing style. With an acclaimed performance at Bonnaroo and strong UK chart numbers for their second album Get Awkward, the band looked to be on the verge of a breakthrough.

However, inner strife, the amicable departure of their long-time drummer, and frustration with their label eventually led to an irreconcilable breakup.

Fans should have hope, as Pearl was the undeniable face and musical centerpiece of Be Your Own Pet. With support from respected pros and even greater creative control on her own, Pearl can now “be her own woman,” and imprint her wild spirit on the new album.
