“Light You Up

I just want to light you up
Light you up like a fire
I just want to turn you on
Turn you on and take you higher
Everybody wants a flat screen
Everybody wanna be seen
Everybody wanna be famous
Ain’t nobody gonna blame us
Everybody wants the real deal
Everybody wants to cop a good feel
Everybody wants more money
Everybody wants a taste of your honey
I just want to light you up
Light you up like a fire
I just want to turn you on
Turn you on and take you higher
Everybody wants to pick your guitar
Everybody wanna ride in your fast car
Everybody wants a puff of your pipe dream
Everybody wants a lick of your ice cream
The preacher wants to tell you how to live right
Your momma and your daddy got you uptight
Your lover gonna go and pick another fight
I just wanna keep you up all night.
I just want to light you up
Light you up like a fire
I just want to turn you on
Turn you on and take you higher
Yeah this old world can bring you down
Turn your smile into a frown
Break your heart and make you sad
Drive you stark raving mad
I just want to light you up
Light you up like a fire
I just want to turn you on
Turn you on and take you higher
I just want to light you up
Light you up like a fire
I just want to turn you on
Turn you on and take you higher

  1. I hope the melody is good because the lyrics are trite as hell. Oh I see, the delivery is probably other worldly. That must be it.

I’ll take Elizabeth Cook any day over this drivel. Sorry. She’s a poet of the first order. I don’t know what this is. A rhyming exercise?

Well you asked and i guess I should be more charitable. But why?

  2. Jamie, you obviously don’t have a musical bone in your body . . . take your Lizzy Cook banter down the road . . . Oh and try Critiqueing yourself , nutjob!

  3. I dug the song. I just heard it in a bar and thought it was good enough to look it up and see who it was by. I’ve never been a Mullins fan but was surprised to see it was by him. Nice soulful melody..

  4. wow, i just heard this song on xm radio and had to find out who would write such a horrible song. i agree with jamie. the melody is even worse than the lyrics. the melody is simply climbing thirds in a major key… which my 3 year old can do on a piano. i have never commented on anything online before, but i felt compelled to say something about this. i was shocked that such a horrible song would be played on the radio.

  5. Michelle, I think it is the very simplicity of the melody and the lyrics that give the song its subtle power. It evokes a gut-level response rather than encouraging us to explore its complexity, which is completely appropriate to the subject.

  6. I have to agree with Michelle and Jaime – lyrics are facile, unimaginitive, could be the product of aN undrperforming 10th grade English lit student. Kind of fun to sing along to in the car, though. We don’t all have to be Byron (but thank goodness a few are!)

  7. To Jamie and Michelle, I quote Sibelius: “Never pay any attention to what critics say. Remember, a statue has never been set up in honor of a critic.”

It’s okay. Just relax. You’re allowed to dance. Beethoven isn’t rolling over in his grave at the sound of this. I promise the music scholars of the world won’t be bothered. And if they do, I don’t care.
