Daily Discovery: El Cantador, “Empty Carz”

Videos by American Songwriter

ARTIST: El Cantador

SONG: “Empty Carz”

BIRTHDATE: April 13, 2007

BIRTHPLACE: Heath and Alex in Mississippi. Sean in Mobile, AL.

AMBITIONS: To continually make interesting music, surf bigger waves, climb bigger mountains, and tour, tour, tour!

TURN-OFFS: Overly using the word “awesome” or “amazing”. Takes the luster out of it.

TURN-ONS: Risk

DREAM GIG: David Letterman with Andrew Bird, Paul McCartney, and Darren King smashing along with us.

TV ADDICTIONS: Breaking Bad, Dexter, Firefly, Quantum Leap

PETS: Band Pet? Baby bird we met on Easter morning this year after a tour. It is no longer with us. So it’s a band ghost now.

WORST JOB I EVER HAD:
Alex had to dispose of dead dogs one summer.

THINGS THAT MAKE ME FEEL SEXY: Red Wine

5 THINGS EVERY MAN SHOULD OWN: An island, a sailboat, a plane, a big diamond, and a plan.

I WROTE THIS SONG: several years ago late at night in the car while waiting on a train going home. I finished the lyrics in the bathroom downstairs at my parent’s house. The band picked it up and reworked it for the album. The synth line is inspired by The Goonies when they go underground looking for Chester Copperpot’s gold. It was an attempt to “lighten the load” of the lyrical content.
