Daily Discovery: John Brodeur, “Masterpiece”

Videos by American Songwriter

ARTIST: John Brodeur

SONG:Masterpiece

BIRTHDATE: Dec. 8

BIRTHPLACE: Saratoga Springs, NY

AMBITIONS: Learn to play the cello; perform at Buddakan.

TURN-OFFS: Bigotry; bad pizza.

TURN-ONS: Educated voters; kick-ass drummers.

DREAM GIG: I think it would be fun to play in Jay-Z’s band! But, again: Buddakan.

MY PREFERRED METHOD OF TRANSPORTATION: I love my van! But I can’t always be on tour. When I’m at home in New York, I prefer walking.

CELEBRITY CRUSH: I usually have music crushes. Girls with guitars and so forth. Back in the day it was PJ Harvey and Juliana Hatfield. Now it’s Annie Clark (St. Vincent) and Sharon Van Etten.

WHAT MAKES A WOMAN SEXY: Sense of humor; confidence; great hair.

5 THINGS EVERY MAN SHOULD OWN: A wristwatch; a tailored suit; Gentlemen by the Afghan Whigs; wait… isn’t this a strange question for a songwriting publication?

I NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT: Thinking I’ve forgotten something.

I WROTE THIS SONG: Late summer 2000, in about 30 minutes, with Elvis Costello and Jeff Buckley in mind. (This version was recorded in 2010 for Tiger Pop Ten).
