We first caught wind of Matt Haeck back in May, when we premiered the song “Minnie Pearl” from his debut album Late Bloomer. Haeck returns to the American Songwriter fold this week with a brooding new video for the track “Lucky Cigarette.” The video was shot and directed by Joshua Shoemaker, a Nashville-based filmmaker who has also worked with Hurray For The Riff Raff and The Deslondes.

“I wrote “Lucky Cigarette” at a time of leaving and heartbreak,” Haeck says of the tune. “That smoke is a nail in a coffin but it’s also a chance for something new. I’ve been wanting to do a music video with Joshua Shoemaker for a while. His style and eye for the cinematic in a song is visionary, so I was pretty excited when he got on board. We wanted to shoot something simple and beautiful that doesn’t distract from the song, and we came up with what is essentially one shot of me driving my bass player’s antique Ford truck. Very simple. But it works better than I could have imagined. I’ve run out of town, but you’ll never catch me running out of smokes.”
