Check out our exclusive premiere of Nashville-based singer-songwriter Marc Scibilia‘s video for “Better Man.”
The song is a simple folk tune in the vein of Woody Guthrie and early Dylan taken from Scibilia’s 2015 album Out of Style. The video is a simple affair focusing solely on Scibilia performing the song in a kitchen, with countertops filled with Solo cups, wine bottles and blank party flags draped over the refrigerator. It’s like bleak birthday party for one, which mirrors the song’s conception.
“I wrote ‘Better Man’ on my 22nd birthday, alone, in a hotel room in Atlanta,” says Scibilia of the song’s creation. “I was pretty depressed. “When I was 18 I moved from Buffalo, New York, to Nashville, Tennessee, which was a great move at the time because all my friends were going to college and I knew I couldn’t open another textbook. But around 22 they all started getting jobs and making money. Here I was, by myself, playing a gig for probably 50 bucks. I wondered if my decision to pursue music was ultimately a bad decision. I wrote ‘Better Man’ that night about not measuring up to people around you and living your own life and finding your own love.”
