Earlier this fall, Kace Musgraves released A Very Kacey Christmas, an album comprising covers of holiday classics as well as a number of new, original songs. One of those original songs is “Christmas Makes Me Cry,” an album highlight about the sadder side of Christmas that Musgraves co-wrote with Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally.

In the video below, Musgraves details how “Christmas Makes Me Cry” came to be, sharing, “I bawled when we wrote it.”

“To me, there’s, you know, kind of a melancholy, sadder side of Christmas,” she says in the video. “I wrote a really sad Christmas song for this album, which was something that I was really excited to do, to kind of tap into that unspoken, sometimes just melancholy heaviness that we kind of go through when we think about people that were here with us and maybe aren’t now.
