Jensen P-12Q and Electric Lightning Speakers

And it’s well documented that he’ll spend hours trying to match up guitars with amps, pickups with guitars, and even strings with pickups…but tonal gratification may be as simple as swapping out the speaker in the amp. The alnico-equipped P-12Q and ceramic Electric Lightning are two offerings from Jensen that just might be the cure for anemic tone. Using a mint 1966 Fender Deluxe Reverb as the slave driver, both speakers were run through the paces in a Lopo cabinet. The P-12Q sounded pleasant enough clean with the guitar and amp set at moderate volume, but like an impatient child, it really wanted to go out and play. Once the guitar and amp were cranked up, the speaker started to show off what it does best: Get Raunchy. And it’s no wonder; the P-12Q siblings were stock equipment in the tweed amps Fender made back in the ‘50s. The P-12Q, with its alnico magnet, performed to meet its legacy. The sound was well balanced with a natural sounding low end. Vintage rockers will love this speaker for keeping it real. While some old school players might cringe at the thought of using a ceramic magnet speaker, the Electric Lightning might make converts out of them. The clean sounds that emanated from the test amp were every bit as defining of the Blackface tone as the P-12 was to the tweed. And once it was kicked into overdrive mode: Wow! The low end was exquisitely pronounced, the mids could only be described as sweet and the highs were defining and clear. These are the kind of tones that could make a guitarist’s career. Jensen has a winner here.
