Harley Lee Allen, a beloved country music songwriter, died at the age of 55 on Wednesday, March 30. The cause was cancer.

The son of the late bluegrass singer Harley “Red” Allen, Harley Lee recorded as a solo artist for Smithsonian Folkways in the 1980s.  As a songwriter for others, Allen generated a number of hits, including “Between the Devil and Me” by Alan Jackson in 1997, “The Little girl” by John Michael Montgomery in 2000, “The Baby” by Blake Shelton in 2002, “My Last Name” by Dierks Bentley in 2003, “Tough Little Boys” by Gary Allan in 2003, and “If Nobody Believed In You” and “I’ll Wait For You” by Joe Nichols in 2004 and 2006.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son, who reside in their hometown of Nashville.
