Sessions: Bryan Cates

Bryan Cates is part of a dying breed of songwriters who have the ability to deftly interweave harmony, lyrics, and melody. With Cates, no ancillary fluff (i.e., dark wash Levi’s, hand-rolled cigarettes) is necessary to sell his wares. The songs are the songs, and Bryan Cates is Bryan Cates.

Here is a guy who can throw out a quote from Billy Madison, take off his Braves ball cap, and then blow the mind of every image-conscious, PBR-sipping hipster in the crowd with a tune like “Lonesome Traveling” or “Last Long Light.” And what better person to have playing for our first session at Matheny Manor, home of Roman Candle drummer Logan Matheny? Ladies and gentlemen, Bryan Cates.
