Calling All Deadheads: Dead Covers Project Seeks Submissions

Videos by American Songwriter

Calling all Deadheads:

Does your cover of “Loser” make you feel like a winner? Can your banjo turn “Truckin’” into bluegrass gold? Do your vocals on “Sugaree” ring with more passionate ease than Jerry Garcia’s?

Okay, that last one was a stretch. He’s a legend.

But if you have the chops to cover one of the greatest original jam bands of all time, the Dead wants to hear what you’ve got. Through the month of February, fans can upload their own Grateful Dead covers to YouTube, tagged “DeadCoversProject.” The Grateful Dead will feature one of those videos each day in February, on their Facebook page and on Dead.net

In March, Dead.net will choose five of those featured videos to highlight in all the Dead’s online properties. The artists in the top five videos will be profiled on Dead.net and even in the Grateful Dead Almanac of 2012.

The videos must cover a song written or recorded by the Grateful Dead, but beyond that, originality is welcome. Whether their style is folk, ska or bubblegum pop, fans have the freedom to make it their own.

All submitted covers will be available to view on the band’s YouTube channel, so viewers can also participate by watching the submissions and “liking” their favorites.

Make it original. Make it yours. “Make it somehow on the dreams you still believe.”
