ARTIST: The Bird and The Bear

SONG: “As Soon As Winter Comes”

BIRTHDATE: Mirthe: July 22nd, 1987, Garry: December 24th, 1989

HOMETOWN: Mirthe: Groningen, The Netherlands, Garry: Saratoga, Wyoming

CURRENT LOCATION: Nashville, Tennessee

AMBITIONS: Mirthe: I would love to be able to make a living doing the things I love. Music, obviously, but also with Polaroid photography and writing.

Garry: Anything creative. As long as I’m making music I enjoy with good company, I’ll be happy.

TURN-OFFS: Mirthe: Know-it-alls and indecisiveness., Garry: Nashville drivers.

TURN-ONS: Mirthe: Positivity and old cameras. And chocolate. And I can’t forget Garry’s dance moves., Garry: Good coffee and free beer. Oh, and my dance moves.

DREAM GIG: Mirthe: Support act for Alison Krauss at the Ryman., Garry: Too many to name. But if we ever opened for Ryan Adams I would probably wet myself onstage before we finished the first song.

FAVORITE LYRIC: Mirthe: “I think love is so much easier than you realize / If you can give yourself to someone then you should” – from “A Little Bit of        Everything” by Dawes. I almost cry every time I hear it.

Garry: “Taking nothing back to show there for these dues I’ve paid / But the soul I almost sold here and the body I’ve been giving away” – from “Just the Other Side of Nowhere” by Kris Kristofferson. I’ve recited this line to myself so many times. It can be hard trying to make a living so far away from home, but it’s harder coming back empty-handed.

CRAZIEST PERSON I KNOW: Mirthe: Aren’t we all a little crazy?, Garry: I’m legally prohibited from mentioning their name.

SONG I WISH I WROTE: Mirthe: “Standing on the Moon” by Lera Lynn., Garry: Most recently “Cover Me Up” by Jason Isbell.

5 PEOPLE I’D MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH: Mirthe: Alison Krauss, Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, Vivian Maier, and Joy Williams.

Garry: David Rawlings, Gillian Welch, Darrell Scott, Guy Clark, and Ryan Adams. They all get a plus one, of course.

MY FAVORITE CONCERT EXPERIENCE: Mirthe: Nickel Creek in Cary, North Carolina this year. I had been waiting so long to see them live!

Garry: Dawes with Shovels and Rope at the Ryman. Our friend Stephen got us tickets as a wedding present and we got to share an incredible show with him!

I WROTE THIS SONG: Mirthe: I wrote it at a time when we were faced with a lot of uncertainty. I was in the immigration process and a lot of things in our lives were shifting. The song was a realization that no matter what people think or what happens, if you’re with the right person you can face it together. It’s about building a life together and facing the cold when it comes.
