3rd Place, July/August 2015 Contest: “Fare Me Well”

3rd Place
“Fare Me Well”
Brannon Gilliam
Lexington, North Carolina

Well I’m back in my Carolina hometown
With a secret I’ve been carrying around
Of how that all star boy somehow
Became the man I am right now
It’s a bombshell
Fare me well

So it’s time for me to own the life I’ve got
Lay my money down and drive it off the lot
Gotta chin up, gotta look strong
It’s time to move this thing along
It’s time to tell
Fare me well

Fare me well, wish me luck
Turns out I don’t love girls and trucks
This is me, bustin’ through that closet door
I’m hoping someday soon I’ll see
That the truth has set me free
And I‘ll wonder what I was so worried for

But for now I’m scared as hell
So fare me well

I accepted long ago that I felt different
But I didn’t want to stand out from the crowd
Seems I’ve come out in my mind
a hundred thousand times
But I haven’t ever said the words out loud
Until now

Fare me well, wish me luck
Turns out I don’t love girls and trucks
This is me, bustin’ through that closet door
I’m hoping someday soon I’ll see
That the truth has set me free
And I‘ll wonder what I was so worried for

But for now I’m scared as hell
So fare me well
