Colorado quintet Elephant Revival are gearing up to release a new album, Petals, on Apr. 1. In advance of the release, gengt an exclusive first listen to a new track from the record, “When I Fall.” The song dances between delicate, spacious verses and punching choruses, the latter of which’s power is sustained by the deep, string-rattling bass and Elephant Revival’s characteristically strong harmonies.

Petals will be the band’s fourth studio album, and first since 2013’s These Changing Skies. The record will be a more intimate take on Elephant Revival’s strain of roots music, which blends traditional folk instruments with a disparate variety of genres.
“‘When I Fall’ is a song about transcending grief and loss,” says Dango Rose, who along with providing vocals, also plays banjo, mandolin and double-base for the band. “At some point, we will all lose someone close to us. In this case, I lost my teacher. The weight of loss can appear impenetrable, yet when we allow ourselves to truly experience grief, a feeling of lightness will ultimately pierce through the veil. We are all human, and at times in our lives, we will all inevitably fall. It is how we choose to rise that ultimately defines us.”
