We first heard from Texas singer-songwriter Kirby Brown last fall when he released the video for “Joni,” the debut single from his catchy EP Out of Exile. Now, Brown is back with the sequel to that release, the appropriately titled Out Of Exile 2.

To record the EP, Brown decamped to FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, enlisting his fellow bandmates The Texas Gentleman (who’ve played with Kris Kristofferson and Nikki Lane) to back him on the project.

One of the standout tracks on the EP is “Sweet Shame,” a tune that finds fellow Texan Leon Bridges lending backup vocals.

Of the song, Brown says:

“When I wrote this song several years ago, I was feeling a little put-off: I had come out of a romantic foray where I had been used and then carelessly hung up to dry. The song came from a place rumination on how things might have turned out if circumstances were different — or if we were different as people. To borrow from Hemingway, my attitude was very ‘Isn’t it pretty to think so?’ I never could have known that a couple of years later that I would feel the same sense of having my hands tied at the changing tides in society. But while the outlook is sometimes bleak, I do keep hope that things will always change for the better in the long run — and isn’t it pretty to think so?”
