Mark Heard was a beloved producer and songwriter before he passed away at the age of 40 in 1992. To celebrate his life and catalog, some of Americana’s best and brightest artists have come together for Treasure of the Broken Land: the Songs of Mark Heard, a special tribute album to be released June 2.
The Phil Madeira-produced project features Rodney Crowell, Buddy Miller, and the North Mississippi Allstars, among many others. It also includes Nashville’s Drew Holcomb, who offers his own take on the 1992 Satellite Sky Heard track “Tip of My Tongue.”
“I loved the way we took a big ’80s rocker and stripped to its bluesy core, a song going through the ringer and still coming out on the other side,” Holcomb says. “I was able to find some of my hometown Memphis grit and dig deep into the pocket Phil and his band were in. We did it in two takes, as it’s much more about the magic than the perfection on this one.”
“Drew chose ‘Tip Of My Tongue,’ and the band was Emmylou Harris’ Red Dirt Boys,” Madeira adds. “We’ve been playing together for more than a decade. So, it was easy for us to fall into the Muscle Shoals, Stones-y groove, all ignited by Drew’s passion and spirit.”
