One of the most resourceful production applications to hit the streets of music-creating enthusiasts is, arguably, Ableton Live. Great work has been done under the hood to improve the quality of Live 7’s already existing features. An awesome foundation has been strengthened without the confusion of too many bells and whistles. Notably, the audio engine has been enhanced to 64-bit summing. The EQ8 is also 64-bit. A new compressor has been added, incorporating a gate, auto-filtering and a handy side-chain feature. The compressor sports three models comparable to some of the most coveted vintage compressors professionally used today. The MIDI engine has also been improved. The timing is better-resulting in minimized jitter.

Many user requests also have been fulfilled. Time signature changes are now an option, as well as the ability to export audio to video. Tempo nudge (which is midi map addressable) is a feature that should come in very handy for DJs.

Drum Rack is an advanced addition that gives every sound in the rack its own channel. Each sound can be automated individually. Rex files are readable and utilize the great new slicing feature. Basically, each drum sound from the Rex file is turned into a MIDI note in the drum rack and can be individually manipulated and arranged to create any new beat.

Electric, Tension and Analog are all virtual instruments added to Live 7. These offer libraries of electric keys, physically modeled stringed instruments, and a dual oscillator subtractive synth, respectively. You can monitor your audio with the Spectrum Analyzer. This impressive waveform display can be used to hone in on problematic areas, or, simply use it to impress your inner Zen. Live 7 continues to be professional and innovative, while still fun for the musician.
