Anyone familiar with the SR-16, Alesis’ predecessor to the SR-18, knows it was THE go-to beat-box for most of the ‘90s. It was actually the longest running beat-box in production. This impressive classic retains the same legendary qualities and familiar functionality, while boasting 32MB sound sets that include various drums (from country to electronic), a percussion set, and a bass synth set. Another great new option is the built-in effects. Reverb, EQ and compression are all on board to take the groove higher. Pattern Play Mode allows the user to direct which pattern is played next by pressing one of 12 pads in real time. This makes life easier when it comes to laying down a sequence correctly. Without having to explain it or map it out, it allows you to just do it. As far as that goes, there is also a mute/solo function for isolating drums bass or percussion for a slick break down or an accentuated part. Aside from all the new sounds and programming upgrades, this last one made me truly wish they had changed it before I went on my last family vacation. The option of running on batteries allows the SR-18 to be truly portable. Slip it into a backpack and bring a pair of headphones for that next long trip or commute and you can be creating in style en route to grandma’s happenin’ crib…eww. That just didn’t sound right. OK, how about droppin’ a fat beat on the flight to your next gig. Much better.
