Audio Technica’s ATM450 cardioid condenser is one of the Artist Series microphones which are designed for practical stage or studio use at an affordable price. The specific purposes of a small diaphragm condenser like this one include miking acoustic guitars, drum overheads, percussion, fiddles and other acoustic instruments. The ATM450 has a durable metal body and comes with a special isolation clamp for shock protection. It also features a 10db pad and an 80hz low frequency roll off. The most unique thing though, is its side address design. Most small condensers are end address, meaning you point the end of the microphone directly at the source. Side address makes the ATM450 easier to position in cramped areas around drum kits. I test ran this mic in my home studio with a Martin M-21. I placed the mic right in front of the sound hole and maybe a little toward the back of the guitar. I moved the mic around a bit and found it sounded best when aiming a little more toward the lower (brighter) half of the Martin. It sounded great; natural and detailed with very little muddiness or boom. The 80hz roll off switch really helped to “tighten” the sound, focusing more on the frequency range of the guitar and picking up less of the errant bass noise of the room I was in. I switched on the 10db pad and cranked the gain on my tube preamp up a bit and got a slightly grittier sound out of the preamp without overdriving it. The pad is great for this and for louder sources that may overload. Overall, the ATM450 was very impressive at its price of 369.00. Perfect for live or home studio use. A high end small diaphragm condenser will cost hundreds if not thousands more than this one, so the ATM450 makes a practical instrument mic for song demos or live performances.
