I’ve owned two arch tops, a Silvertone and a Gibson both from the 40s.   I never played them because it would be easier to dig a six foot hole in hard-packed dirt than make a “G” chord on these guitars.  Five minutes of fighting their high action left my hands mangled.  They were sexy but unplayable.

The equally sexy Godin 5th Ave seduced me immediately with its vintage vibe.  The flat Black finish, vintage tuners,  classic f-holes, contoured high-gloss headstock, floating pickguard, cream binding and raised rosewood bridge with trapeze perfectly replicate my old Gibson Banner. Unlike my old archtops,  I can actually  play the Godin.

Archtops never seem like an easy play.  They have that movable, fragile-looking bridge precariously perched high on tiny spindles.  Bludgeon a flattop with a hard flat pick and it loves it, smack an archtop like that and you’re bridge moves.  However,  I showed very little restraint while playing The 5th Ave,  beating that thing like it owed me money.  The 5th responded beautifully with great tone, lots of projection & volume in the low/mids and solid tuning.  The 5th Ave has a comfortable action,  not telecaster low but still low enough to move Charlie Christian fast .

Godin accurately describes their 5th Avenue as “the archtop acoustic of the past, for today’s modern musician.”  I say pick up a fifth today, and while you’re at it, get this guitar.
