There are two exemplary new recording devices that all songwriters should be exploring for possible purchase in 2008. One is the Zoom Handy Recorder, which we covered in a previous issue. The second is the Micro-track II from M-Audio. They both can fit snugly into your back pocket. There’s a lot to be said about high quality gear that fits into your back pocket. The Micro-track II is a little pricier, but it’s on ear-to-ear level quality with the Zoom. The battery powered with 9V plug-in option Micro-track, like the Zoom, kills two birds with one stone; it enables you to document a work tape of quick shot ideas, inspiration and hi-fi on-the-go moments, but if you so choose, you can also produce a perfectly viable/pitchable guitar (or piano)/vocal performance that will give most lower-budget studio demos a run for their money. The end-quality of your session will depend on how you execute and maneuver levels for the increased gain capacity/range package (tweaked from the original Micro-track device). The 48V phantom-powered mic preamps and balanced ¼-inch line inputs ensure that the best technology available-for the size-is at your fingertips. To conclude, this is one of the biggest no-brainers in the history of Earth. Listen to Toby Keith: “Getcha Some.”
