Punk Rock & Paintbrushes, a pop-up gallery featuring artwork by a variety of rock acts, will be onsite at both festivals this summer. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith will showcase original paintings created from the rhythm and movements of his drumsticks. Smith started painting in 2015 with his series, Parallax, which includes 13 rhythmic artworks on canvas that he’s shown in exhibitions around the world. Other artists whose work will be in the gallery include Pennywise frontman Jim Lindberg, drummer Andrew Campanelli of The Revivalists, and Strung Out’s lead singer Jason Cruz.

“I work with people who want to grow; the Chili Peppers are open to new directions and as an artist, it’s the best creative situation to be in,” Smith says in a press release. “It’s simple: I love what I’m doing and I’m really lucky. I got pretty good at the music thing.”

“Punk Rock & Paintbrushes has a mission to show the intersection of music and art by producing onsite art exhibits at various galleries and music festivals around the world and showcasing musicians’ creativity in a whole new light, as expressed through their original artwork,” as described in a press release.

Punk Rock & Paintbrushes will benefit a nonprofit at each festival, with BeachLife partnering with Surfrider Foundation, which aims to protect the ocean by reducing plastic pollution, coastal preservation, clean water, and more. Summerfest joined forces with Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, an organization that provides free mental health, suicide prevention, and substance disorder services to people in impoverished areas.

BeachLife Festival takes place May 5-7 in Redondo Beach, California, while Summerfest takes over Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for three weekends on June 22-24, June 29-July 1, and July 6-8. Tickets for both festivals are available now.
