Talk about a versatile piece of equipment. The Guitar Rig 3 by Native Instruments provides virtually every tone imaginable-ranging from a clean, clear jazz feel to a gut-wrenching, high-gain metal roar, and pretty much everything in between. This setup is a dream for any guitarist who continuously searches for that ultimate custom tone.

The software can run as a stand-alone application or as a plug-in, on Mac OSx or Windows XP. The sleek interface is easy to use, allowing one to scroll not only through different amps and matched cabinets, but also through an array of classic- and modern-effect racks, and personal guitar assistants, such as a Loop machine or Crossfader.

If you’re looking for a quick fix to replicate one of your favorite guitarist’s sounds, the Guitar Rig 3 also has preset rigs found in the Signature Sounds section. Got the itch to play some Hendrix? Try the “Jimi Wing” setting. Or if you can’t seem to get that unmatchable Gilmour tone out of your head, try tweaking around with the “Pink Numb Lead.”

Making your own custom tone is just as easy, and much more rewarding in my opinion. Out of the handful of new features from its predecessor (Guitar Rig 2), a few notable additions include an array of brand new amplifier models, sound shaping effects and a “Live View” mode, which is ideal for onstage performance. But perhaps the most rocking thing about this updated model is the “RIG KONTROL” pedal board.

With a direct high-speed USB cable to your computer, the RIG KONTROL pedal board allows you to get that live feel and the accessibility of changing effects during a song-without having to stop to click the mouse. The board has eight freely assignable foot-switches and one continuous controller pedal with an on/off switch, all of which are directly linked to the guitar rack you have created on screen.

All instrument inputs and outputs, as well as MIDI, are located on the RIG KONTROL pedal board. Both the input and output have their own gain-adjustment knobs for easier control. The separate left and right outputs allow for cross-fade capabilities to either your computer or an external amplifier.

All in all this is a fine package of software and gear-a solid purchase.
