Nashville songwriter Steve Mandile stopped by the American Songwriter office back in September to perform “Unlucky Me,” a tune that appears on his debut solo project, 2017’s Beautiful Brand New Day. A native of San Angelo, Texas, Mandile has landed cuts with Tim McGraw, Ronnie Dunn, Charles Esten and Craig Morgan during his time in Music City.
For this performance, Mandile is performing with the Tonewood Amp, a unique effect unit that opens up new possibilities for the acoustic guitar. The hardware attaches to the guitar via magnets (without marking up the guitar) and provides reverb, delay, chorus and other tonalities to your sound in an unplugged setting. The user can also access other third-party software apps via an insert jack and add more flexibility, and then send the signal out to an amp or mixer. Here, Steve uses cello sounds from SampleTank to accent the mood of his song.
The session was sponsored by Tonewood Amp. The video was shot and edited by Josh Kranich. Steve Martin recorded and edited the audio.
