Remember When: Elton John Had a Top-10 Hit Despite It Being Banned by Some Radio Stations

In 1974, Elton John released his eighth album, Caribou, following his third consecutive No. 1 album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which stayed eight weeks at the top.

Caribou’s lead single, “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its follow-up single, “The B—h Is Back,” faced controversy due to its title.

Despite initial radio station resistance, “The B—h Is Back” became a hit, inspired by John’s mood swings and lyricist Bernie Taupin’s then-wife’s comments.

Some radio stations boycotted the song, but it still debuted on the Hot 100 at No. 63 and peaked at No. 4, helping Caribou become another No. 1 album for John.

Over time, “The B—h Is Back” became less controversial, inspiring covers by artists like Tina Turner and Miley Cyrus, cementing its status as a fan favorite.
