The 1980s were a golden age for metal music. Thanks to some heavy tunes in prior decades (we see you Iron Butterfly), by the 1980s, metal was in full form. Audiences craved the dark, brooding stuff. And bands were there to provide it.
That’s just what we wanted to dive into here below. We wanted to highlight three acts from back in the day that continue to impact our lives now. Indeed, these are three metal bands that formed in the 1980s whose heavy melodies still echo decades later.

Metallica
Perhaps the most famous of all heavy metal groups, Metallica formed in Los Angeles in 1981. Two years later, the outfit released their debut LP, Kill ‘Em All, which included hit songs like “The Four Horsemen” and “Seek & Destroy”. From there, a gigantic career followed with 10 more records and a slew of popular tracks, many of which you can still hear on the radio today. Fronted by singer James Hetfield, Metallica has featured some of the biggest names in metal amongst their ranks, including drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist Kirk Hammett.
Slayer
Formed in Huntington Park, California, in 1981, Slayer released their debut record, Show No Mercy, two years later in 1983. From there, the band released 11 more albums, including their latest, Repentless, in 2015. Today, Slayer is known as one of the “big four” bands of thrash metal, one of the Founding Fathers on Mount Rushmore, if you will, along with Anthrax, Metallica, and Megadeth. But when you hear Slayer’s early work, you understand why they are so important. They are simply mesmerizing.
Megadeth
Speaking of Megadeth, the metal band first got together in 1983 in Los Angeles. Along the way, the prolific outfit released 16 more full-length records, including their self-titled album earlier this year in 2026. Metal bands often like to work in the extremes with their lyrics and aesthetics. Why? Well, it can just be more fun that way. And that’s what art is for! For evidence of this, just look at the salacious title of this early track. It was released on the album of the same name, Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good! Indeed, that’s metal for you!
