Much of the country music tradition is concerned with cowboys. Country artists have been singing about their wayfaring spirit since the inception of the genre. But, on the other–more feminine–side of things we have the cowgirls. Find four of our favorite songs in that vein, below.

4 of the Best Country Songs About Cowgirls
1. “If I Was a Cowboy” – Miranda Lambert
First up on our list of country songs about cowgirls, we have this stunning mid-tempo track. Though this song has “cowboy” in the title, it certainly fits our parameters for a “cowgirl” song. Miranda Lambert dreams about being a free range cowboy and doing all the careless things they get to do. I’d be a legend at loving and leaving / Nipping on a whiskey and numbing up my feelings, she sings in this ode to the wayfaring way of life.
If I was a cowboy, I’d be wild and free
Rollin’ around these towns like tumbleweeds
I’d be a legend at loving and leaving
Nipping on a whiskey and numbing up my feelings
2. “Dime Store Cowgirl” – Kacey Musgraves
No matter how far Kacey Musgraves‘ career takes her, she will at heart always be just a “Dime Store Cowgirl.” She’s experienced quite a lot over the last, lauded decade, but it’s still not enough to wipe away her country roots. I’m just a dime store cowgirl / That’s all I’m ever gonna be, she sings.
I’m just a dime store cowgirl
That’s all I’m ever gonna be
You can take me out of the country
But you can’t take the country out of me, no
3. “How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls” – George Strait
It’s not just female country singers that have delivered odes to cowgirls. Next up on our list of the best country songs about cowgirls, we have this George Strait track. Strait tips his hat to the western-tinged women of the world. How ’bout them cowgirls / Boys ain’t they something, he asks.
How ’bout them cowgirls
Boys ain’t they something
Sure are some proud girls
And you can’t tell them nothing
And I tell you right now girls
May just be seven wonders of this big, whole round world
But how ’bout them cowgirls
4. “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues” – Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton
Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton joined forces for this track in the early ’90s. While most of the songs on this list have a positive outlook on the cowgirl way of life, this track focuses on the somber moments. Even cowgirls get the blues sometimes, they admit, likely speaking from personal experience.
But even cowgirls get the blues sometimes
Bound together, what to do sometimes
Get this feeling like she’s too far gone
The only way she’s ever been
