4 of the Weirdest Songs Classic Rock Bands Ever Released

Classic rock boasts some of the most legendary songs of all time, and some of those songs also happen to be the weirdest, too. Let’s look at just a handful of the weirdest classic rock songs out there that still manage to be certified bangers!

1. “I Am The Walrus” by The Beatles

Probably the most famous of all the weirdest classic rock songs out there, fans often either love or hate “I Am The Walrus” by The Beatles. A standout track on Magical Mystery Tour, this song was written with the intention of being weird and difficult to interpret. 

John Lennon primarily wrote the song based on several LSD trips, as well as the 1871 poem “The Walrus And The Carpenter” by Lewis Carroll. The orchestral elements really make the song feel more surreal, too.

2. “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow” by Frank Zappa

Frank Zappa was no stranger to “weird”. This song is a great example of how casually odd he could get. “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow” is about as weird as the whole suite of songs on his 1974 album Apostrophe (‘), and that weirdness lies in its storytelling.

This track follows a man who dreams of being an Eskimo named Nanook. His mother warns him not to “eat that yellow snow” before he sets off from home. The song only gets weirder (and more vulgar) from there.

3. “Bike” by Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd dished out a few weird songs during their heyday. It’s not exactly surprising, considering they are one of the most well-known (and pioneering) psychedelic rock bands of all time. 

One particular oddball track is “Bike” from the band’s debut album, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. This song feels like a true fever dream. Explaining what it’s about is a lot more difficult than just letting you listen to it and let your imagination run wild.

4. “Mr. Crowley” by Ozzy Osbourne

This entry on our list of the weirdest classic rock songs is a well-loved fan favorite for heavy metal fans. And it definitely wouldn’t be seen as “weird” by Ozzy Osbourne’s fanbase. However, to the casual listener or more conservative critic of heavy metal music, this song is about as weird as it gets.

“Mr. Crowley” is a chilling song all about the famed English occultist Aleister Crowley. That introduction on the synth by Don Airey and that guitar solo from Randy Rhoads just cannot be beat.
