The 1990s was a fantastic era for country music, especially when it came to the wealth of female singers who came onto the scene. These are just four of the most underrated country songs by female artists that came out during this particularly solid era of country music.

1. “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her” by Mary Chapin Carpenter

Mary Chapin Carpenter may have started her career in folk music, but she was excellent as a country singer. She even managed to combine the two genres beautifully on this 1992 track from her album Come On Come On.

There’s something about this song that just sounds like the 1990s. If you were around during that decade, this song might scratch your brain or at least give you a solid dose of nostalgia.

2. “Outbound Plane” by Suzy Bogguss

Suzy Bogguss had a great time in the early 1990s with her hit album Aces, which produced three chart-topping singles. One single was the song “Outbound Plane”. Even though it’s a cover of a Nanci Griffith classic, Bogguss put a modern country spin on the track that worked quite beautifully.

3. “Tell Me Why” by Wynonna Judd

Powerhouse country singer Wynonna Judd started her career as one half of the mother-daughter band The Judds. Since then, her solo career has delivered hit after hit, and she’s not stopping anytime soon. Still, the 1990s was a great era of her solo career, and you can hear her at her best on the song “Tell Me Why”.

This song was the title track of her very successful 1993 album, and it boasts a country sound with a decades-old girl group vibe.

4. “XXX’s And OOO’s” by Trisha Yearwood

Commonly known as “American Girl”, Trisha Yearwood’s 1990s hit “XXX’s And OOO’s” was one of the most underrated country songs by a female artist in the 1990s. It did pretty well on the charts, but eventually disappeared from popularity in favor of the many, many country songs that topped the charts during that decade.

It’s an excellent track that tackles what so many women in the 1990s were dealing with, from diet culture to low pay for their work. The song deserves more credit, to say the least.
