Back in August former American Idol winner, Carrie Underwood, announced she’d be returning to the show as a judge. The decision came in light of Katy Perry’s departure from the show, and both the producers and fans saw Underwood as a fitting replacement given her stardom was a result of her time on the show.

However, American Idol’s sights weren’t originally set on Underwood—or at least only on Underwood. Rather, the show initially eyed Miley Cyrus to step into the role, according to Life&Style. Of course, the network considered far more people other than Underwood and Cyrus. Though, it seems those were the top two candidates and frankly, you couldn’t go wrong with either one. So despite not landing their first option, American Idol’s newest judge is still bound to leave a trail of success.
Why Miley Cyrus Declined The Offer
Cyrus as Perry’s replacement makes total sense—she is charismatic, talented, and is able to garner a lot of eyeballs to raise ratings. Although, with that attention comes a price. Which is seemingly why Cyrus decided not to go through with American Idol.
Regardless, being the judge for a TV show is not out of the wheelhouse for Cyrus. An insider told Life&Style, “She has a lot more fun judging and mentoring than she has in her various forays into acting as an adult” and “She also knows her fans actually show up to watch her on these shows.” That said, Miley Cyrus won’t surprise anybody if she appears on something such as The Voice in a couple of years.
Carrie Underwood’s Impending Start
Recently, long-time American Idol host, Ryan Seacrest spoke with Entertainment Tonight at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Festival. The major piece of information shared in the interview was when Seacrest teased Underwood’s start state. He told Entertainment Tonight, “[Auditions] start in 10 days, so Carrie will link up with us, Lionel, Luke, and myself and we’ll start the process.”
Well, I’m sure a vast amount of viewers around the world are thankful for Seacrest’s comment. Season 23 of American Idol has led to so much anticipation given Carrie Underwood’s return to the show. She’s surely bound to gift fans a fresh taste, all while giving a dose of nostalgia for American Idol’s early years.
