Brad Paisley writes interesting songs that play up his nice-guy persona and provide a suitable backdrop for his virtuosic guitar playing. Play finds this accomplished technician having a well-deserved lark. That’s not to say that Play doesn’t contain more guitar pickers than there are in heaven and one who really is, or that Paisley isn’t mighty diverting on instrumentals such as “Turf’s Up” and “Les Is More.” It’s just that his duets with B. B. King, Keith Urban and the late Buck Owens are miracles of modern recording technology with more skill than content, not to mention soul.
