Over the years, there have been many different judging styles from many different people on American Idol. The OG Simon Cowell was hard to please, while more recent judges like Richie tend to focus on positive things. Carrie Underwood may fall firmly in the middle, as she recently revealed what kind of judge she’s going to be.

“I can’t lie,” she told Good Morning America this morning, August 2. She added, “I just can’t. You can tell. I feel like I’ll be very honest, but hopefully I can be very constructive and encouraging.”

It looks like Underwood is looking to strike a balance between a harsh judging style and an overly complementary judging style. Ideally, a judge should provide constructive criticism while also highlighting things that are done well. That way, there are opportunities for a contestant to learn and grow while knowing where their strengths lie.

Carrie Underwood Seeks to Strike a Balance Between Judging Styles

Overall, Carrie Underwood shared that she’s going to try to be nice on American Idol, although she did call her honesty “a problem.” Still, she then clarified that she’s really not too harsh of a critic, urging, “Just ask my kids. I’m not too (hard on them).”

Speaking about coming back to American Idol in general, Underwood shared that it “feels like home.” She added, “There’s so many people there who still work on the show who were there when I was a contestant … and I feel like being on both sides of the coin, I’ll hopefully be able to offer some insight and help and kind of a different viewpoint.”

Fans on social media were ecstatic that not only Underwood would be joining, but that Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan were returning. “Thank goodness!” wrote one Instagram user on Ryan Seacrest’s announcement post. “Love [Richie and Bryan] and so excited for Carrie Underwood to join!”
