Dogstar Reveal Harder Edges, “Nasty Bass Solo” by Keanu Reeves on “Breach”

Nearly a month after releasing the first single from their forthcoming album Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees, out October 6, Dogstar has shared their latest single “Breach.” “Turn it way up,” said the band of the song in a statement. “We hope you enjoy it.”

With “Breach,” Dogstar has opened another portal into their new repertoire. The song follows their lead single, “Everything Turns Around,” which marked the band’s first new music since their 2000 sophomore album Happy Ending.

And everything you want / It lies there just beyond your reach / But you’re pushing hard enough to breach roars Bret Domrose around the chorus of the heavier track. “Breach” pivots more towards the crunchier rock of Queens of the Stone Age than Dogstar’s typical lower-fi indie rounds.

“Breach” also features what the band called a “nasty bass solo” by bassist and actor Keanu Reeves when teasing the song several days earlier.

“Spoiler alert: our new song “Breach” features a nasty bass solo by KR [Keanu Reeves],” wrote the band on social media.

Dogstar was formed in 1991 by Reeves and drummer Robert Mailhouse, who met randomly at a supermarket and bonded over hockey. The band was rounded out by singer Bret Domrose, who joined the band in 1994. Dogstar released their debut album, Our Little Visionary, in 1996, followed by Happy Ending, which featured a cover of the 1971 Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell-penned Carpenters hit “Superstar.”

Shortly after the release of Happy Ending, Dogstar split following a final show on Oct. 15, 2002, in Tokyo, Japan. Though the three remained friends, they never worked on new material over the years until they started quarantined jam sessions during the pandemic. The trio eventually began writing again and assembled the 12 tracks for Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees.

Currently, Dogstar is on a 25-city tour supporting the album. The band kicked off their shows at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach, California, on Thursday (August 10) and will continue through the West Coast in Denver, Salt Lake City, and Las Vegas, before heading to Japan for several performances in early September.

Dogstar will resume their North American tour in December with additional dates in New York City, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and D.C. before wrapping up on December 20 in Nashville, Tennessee. The band is also scheduled to perform at comedian Will Ferrell’s Best Night of Your Life 2 benefit event on October 21.
