Following Katy Perry’s departure from American Idol, the former Idol winner, Carrie Underwood, announced she would be stepping in as the new judge. The decision makes total sense given Underwood’s extensive experience with the show both as a participant and a viewer. And we aren’t the only ones who agree, as former judge Simon Cowell recently expressed his approval of Underwood’s selection.

After the announcement, Cowell told E! News, “I think it’s a good choice…Carrie, we go back a long way. I remember her audition like it was yesterday. She was so good, she’s such a sweet person.” In addition to Cowell’s kind remarks, he also gave Underwood some unsolicited advice that will surely make its way into her judging approach.
Urging Carrie Underwood To Not Hold Back
During his time on the show, Cowell was always known for being the unfiltered judge who called it how he saw it. That being so, he gave Underwood some similar advice. “You just gotta say how you feel…It’s not that difficult doing this job, I promise you. We all feel the same things and we don’t agree, thank God. Otherwise, life would be boring. And just enjoy it,” Cowell divulged.
Not only does Cowell’s advice aim to help Underwood, but it also incidentally aims to create better TV. It goes without saying, but it is highly unlikely that Underwood will be as ruthless as Cowell was when he was a judge. Though, hopefully, Cowell’s advice and approach rub off on Underwood, as it would make for some great television and some unexpected moments from the country musician.
Underwood’s Anticipation
It seems Underwood is just as excited to step into her new role as she was when received a golden ticket. Recently, Underwood appeared on SiriusXM and said, “I like to think that I am versatile and, hopefully, when I listen to people come and audition, I can have any lens I need to put on in terms of what music I’m thinking.”
With Cowell’s advice and Underwood’s perspective, season 23 of American Idol will be one for the ages. And maybe, just maybe, Carrie Underwood will become the byproduct of Cowell’s cynically hilarious demeanor.
