Jelly Roll Praises Zach Bryan for Chat with Bruce Springsteen About Defying Genre Pigeonholing

Jelly Roll’s praise of the Bryan/Springsteen interview is definitely not misplaced; it’s an insightful conversation between two artists, taking a look at how they’ve established their careers. One, through decades and defining eras; the other, with a few albums under his belt, looking for the next big project.

“I don’t want to be a country musician,” Zach Bryan told Springsteen. “Everyone calls me it. I want to be a songwriter, and you’re quintessentially a songwriter … No one calls Bruce Springsteen a freaking rock musician, which you are one, but you’re also an indie musician, you’re also a country musician. You’re all these things encapsulated in one man. And that’s what songwriting is.”

Bryan shared how Springsteen is “a hero” to him because he refuses to let genres define him. Zach Bryan is looking to bust through pigeonholed genres as well and let his songwriting do the talking. Springsteen was supportive of his goal. “You can do whatever you want, man. You’re in the right place,” he told Bryan.
