John Prine today announced a new duets album of covers titled For Better, Or Worse, which will be released September 30.

The album recasts songs originally recorded by artists like Hank Williams, George Jones, Buck Owens and others, and serves as a sequel of sorts to In Spite of Ourselves, a similar type of covers album that he released in 1999.

With the exception of Iris DeMent and his wife Fiona, Prine welcomes a new cast of singers to For Better, Or Worse. Among them are Amanda Shires, Kacey Musgraves, and Holly Williams. Prine tells NPR, “I’m writing for a record. It’s been ten years, so I think it’s about time I get one out. And I knew by putting this duet record out, it would trigger, like, “Okay, now where’s your other record?”

Listen to the first song off the album, “Who’s Gonna Take The Garbage Out,” originally popularized by Loretta Lynn and Ernest Tubb, and see Prine’s forthcoming tour dates below.
