Birthdays are supposed to be enjoyed. After all, they only happen once a year. But for Kane Brown’s mother, Tabatha, her special day couldn’t have been more of an emotional roller-coaster.

The hardworking single mom of two not only had her car repossessed, she also spent the early part of the week worrying about her country singer son, who performed at this year’s Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on the day of the mass shooting.

As of the latest count, 59 people were killed and more than 500 were injured when an armed gunman opened fire on Route 91 concertgoers from his high-rise hotel room window at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Oct. 1. Kane, who took the stage earlier that day, had left the festival grounds just minutes before gunshots rang out and chaos ensued.

A new video posted to Kane’s Facebook page shows his mother in tears as she tries to explain why her Oct. 2 birthday was tough.

“So my mom’s had a pretty crappy birthday,” Kane says in the clip above. “What happened mom?”

“You,” she answers with tears in her eyes. “I was scared about you.”

“What else happened?” the “What Ifs” singer asks.

“Well, then my car got [repossessed], because I only make $9. 75 an hour,” she explains. “But, I love my job.”

After hearing his mom’s explanation, Kane surprised her with a brand new car, and handed over a set of keys. Tabatha covered her mouth in absolute shock. Kane’s fiancée, Katelyn Jae, who was also there, then said, “Happy birthday,” as she swooped in to hug her future mother-in-law.
