Losing sight of my purpose / Hoping I can reach the surface / Gravity is such a burden, Maggie Miles sings in her new single, “Momentum.” The ear-grabbing anthem, which American Songwriter exclusively premieres below, has the singer questioning her purpose only to realize she’s the one standing in her way.

“I think ‘Momentum’ is exactly how it sounds,” Miles tells American Songwriter. “It’s my attempt at an anthem that provokes a step toward all that we want to be.”

I don’t want to lose momentum … I know it sounds easy, but I’m the only one that’s in the way, she sings.

“Momentum” is the third song released from the alternative-pop singer’s upcoming sophomore album, The Lack Thereof. Miles wrote the song with Sam Bergeson, who also produced the track. The song shares a message of hope with listeners. The 23-year-old found inspiration for the song after she overcame a personal crisis of self and faith.

The visuals for “Momentum” transports listeners back in time as the clip is reminiscent of music videos from the 1990s. Directed by Acacia Evans, the music video is set in several locations and has Miles breaking through the hurdles she put on herself. Watch the video for “Momentum” below.

“Momentum” is a hint at what’s to come on the album, which is available on May 17 via Warehouse West Entertainment/BMG Rights Management. The song, which includes a pulsating beat, soaring synths, and ethereal vocals from Miles, follows previously released tracks “Asthma” and “Indecent.”

On her forthcoming album The Lack Thereof, Miles dives deeper into the existential questions her 2020 debut album Am I Drowning or Am I Just Learning How to Swim initially provided. Now, she’s attempting to answer those questions. All the while, Miles takes the listener on a musical journey as she merges countless soundscapes and genres, including grunge, indie, rock, and pop.

The Lack Thereof track list follows:

1. “Stomach”
2. “ i”
3. “ Indecent”
4. “ Asthma”
