Miley Cyrus recently opened up in an interview with The New York Times about her alleged former estrangement from her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. Cyrus recently dropped her ninth studio album Something Beautiful, and spoke with the publication about how she has done “a lot of healing” following rumors that she and her fathers were on bad terms.

Cyrus did not outwardly confirm that she was estranged from her father. However, she did allude that her parents’ divorce impacted her relationship with the “Achy Breaky Heart” hitmaker. According to the singer, her parents’ divorce following nearly 30 years together created conflict in the Cyrus family.
Miley Cyrus’ Healing Journey Following Her Parents’ Split Is Admirable
For reference, Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus-Purcell, Miley Cyrus’ mother, were married in 1993. They divorced in 2023, following several years of separation.
“I think timing is everything,” Cyrus told the publication. “As I’ve gotten older, I’m respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents, because my mom [has] really loved my dad for her whole life. And I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard.”
Tish, specifically, has managed Miley and her sister, Noah Cyrus, since their careers began. She is also the owner of Hopetown Entertainment, a TV and film production company.
“And so, I think I took on some of my mom’s hurt as my own,” Cyrus admitted. “Because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain.”
Miley on the Rumors
This, unfortunately, is where many of the estrangement rumors come into play. Last year, Cyrus left her father out of her Grammy acceptance speeches. Billy Ray is currently dating actress Elizabeth Hurley, and Tish married actor Dominic Purcell in 2023. Miley admitted that she found it difficult to accept the new dynamic in her family, but has since come to accept it.
“Now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore,” Cyrus said. “And now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too, I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing. I’m being an adult about it.”
“At first it’s hard,” Cyrus continued. “Because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, ‘Yes, that’s your dad. But that’s just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.’ My child self has caught up.”
Miley Cyrus is currently promoting her recent album, Something Beautiful, which was released just a few days ago.
