To everyone who listens to or has listened to Johnny Cash, we know he is no stranger to romantic truths. Matter of fact, some fans and critics might even go so far as to call him a “hopeless romantic.” No matter what side you fall on, there is one thing that isn’t up for debate. That one thing is that Johnny Cash was madly in love with his wife, June Carter Cash.

Now, there are surely a plethora of instances both public and personal proving this fact to be true. However, one defining instance that further cemented their relationship with the public was the letter Johnny wrote June for her birthday in 1994 while away in Denmark. For some odd reason, the letter was voted the most romantic of all time in a poll commissioned by the British life insurance company, Beagle Street, in 2015.
The Sentimental Romance of Johnny Cash
Given his dark, tragic, and mysterious history, Cash is evidently familiar with love and what it entails. Thus, his love letter encompassed themes that every lover wants to hear every so often. Cash started off his letter with “Happy Birthday Princess” and then went on to acknowledge the ups and downs, and the similarities and differences they shared. All great stuff to include in a love letter. Although, it’s the second paragraph where the nuance of their love truly shines, as Cash wrote—
“But once in a while, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.”
You wish you got a letter like this once in your life, don’t you? Well, you surely will get one, but it might not hold the poetic beauty that Cash’s does. No need to dive any deeper into this letter, as Cash throws his heart out on that page and says exactly what he means.
Beagle Street’s Poll
People vote on very random things. However, has there ever been something as niche as this? Whose to say, but the reason Beagle Street launched this poll was in order try and encourage the English to have more romance in their lives. Furthermore, according to Wide Open Country, the poll received a thousand votes and the vast majority all voted for Cash’s letter.
Regardless of who won and who lost in this seemingly trivial pole, the love between Johnny and June can not be reduced to this single letter. Frankly, it’s unfair to even try, as the two’s relationship contained multitudes and revolved around romantic elements we the public cannot even fathom.
