Before Jelly Roll was one of the most buzzworthy new artists in country music, he was an underground rapper with a sizeable and passionate following. Many fans of his earlier music followed him into country music. In that way, he serves as a bridge between two genres. Last night (November 13), he performed at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and allowed legends from the two genres to meet for the first time. While hanging out backstage, Tech N9ne unknowingly met Garth Brooks.
Tech N9ne has been a staple of the underground rap and horrorcore scene for decades. Along with his business partner Travis O’Guin, the Kansas City, Missouri native built his label, Strange Music, from the ground up. His long friendship with and respect for Jelly Roll led him to attend last night’s show where he was able to hang out backstage. After the show, he met a Brooks but had no idea who he was. The underground icon posted about the interaction on social media this morning.

Tech N9ne Met Garth Brooks and Didn’t Know It
Tech N9ne took to Facebook this morning to share photos and a story from last night’s show. “So last night my partner Trav and I were walking backstage and a family of like six came up to me ‘cause the younger daughter wanted to meet me,” he wrote. So, I shook her hand, the mom’s hand, and friend. Then, the boyfriend’s hand who was holding the baby. Then, I shook the hand of the dad who seemed in charge and over all of them and he was very appreciative of me showing his family love,” Tech added.
He thought the interaction was over and began walking away. Then, O’Guin asked him “the dad” to take a photo with Tech. “If he’ll have me,” the dad said, agreeing to the photo. After they snapped a picture, O’Guin asked his business partner to take a photo of him with the dad.
“At this point, my brain said, ‘Oh this must be someone Trav recognized but I didn’t.’ After I gave Trav his phone back and the family moved on I said, ‘Who was that, Trav?’” he wrote. “He said, ‘Are you f—king kidding me?’ I said no. He said ‘That was f—king Garth Brooks and his family!’”
Allie Colleen, Brooks’ daughter and a country artist in her own right, is currently opening for Jelly Roll on his Beautifully Broken Tour.
