Who is Victoria Monét?

One of the most heavily nominated acts for the upcoming Grammy Awards was the new pop phenom, Victoria Monét. The singer cinched seven nods for her album, Jaguar II. Though her praise as a solo artist has ramped up over the last year, her work as a songwriter has long earned her lauds.

If you like Ariana Grande, Chloe x Halle, and Fifth Harmony, odds are you’ll like Monét. She has written some of those artists’ biggest hits—and her songwriting credits don’t stop there.

If you saw the list of artists nominated for this year’s Grammys and didn’t recognize Monét’s name, take our introduction below as a starting point to your love affair with her music.

Who is Victoria Monet?

Monét got into music the way many other young singers do: her church choir. After catching the performing bug at a young age, she started dance groups, studied at Sheldon High School’s performing arts program, and got into writing poetry.

Producer Rodney Jerkins was the first to really glimpse Monét’s star power. He invited her to join a group he was forming in the early 2010s, Purple Reign. That group was over before it even began, disbanding before sharing any music. It was this setback that fully pushed Monét into songwriting.

Though she continued to work on solo music, it was the songs she created for other artists that bolstered her career early on.

Teaming up with Ariana Grande

Grande is perhaps Monét’s most frequent collaborator. Their professional relationship is grounded in a personal one. The pair met in 2013 and quickly began working together. You can hear Monét’s sound on Grande’s debut album, Yours Truly, in “Daydreamin'” and “Honeymoon Avenue.”

They worked so well together that they kept their professional ties going. Some of Monét’s biggest cuts for the belting vocalist include “7 Rings,” “Thank U Next,” “Let Me Love You,” and “NASA.”

Grande’s sound would likely not be where it is today without the unique songwriting voice of Monét.

Jaguar II

Monét has released many projects as a solo artist but none have been as successful as Jaguar II. All of her 2024 Grammy nods stem from this album. Jaguar, a previously released nine-song project, garnered some buzz, but it pales in comparison to her recognition for the latter work.

Among the tracklist is the deliciously catchy “On My Mama.” The music video features appearances from her daughter Hazel and her mother L’Tanya Chestang-Cubit.
