Eddie Murphy To Play Funk Music Icon in Upcoming Biopic

We’re going to have a great year for music biopics in 2025. Between Timothée Chalamet’s depiction of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown to Jeremy Allen White’s role as Bruce Springsteen in Deliver Me From Nowhere, it’s going to be a wild time for music history fans. And it’s not ending there. According to recent reports, comedian and actor Eddie Murphy will take on the role of funk icon George Clinton in another upcoming biopic.

The upcoming funk film, which has not yet been given an official title, will be directed by Bill Condon and also produced by Eddie Murphy via his own production company. George Clinton himself will also serve as executive producer for the biopic. Virgil Williams (of Mudbound) will write the film’s script.

Murphy worked with Condon in the past, specifically on the 2006 musical film Dreamgirls. Murphy nabbed an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win for his role in that film, so it only makes sense that he and Condon would work together again.

George Clinton seems pretty excited about the upcoming film, as he posted about it on his Instagram account yesterday.

Fans of Clinton are already excited for the upcoming film, too.

“I am all for this! Can’t wait!” said one fan in the comments of the Instagram post.

“Long time overdue,” said another.

What Will The Upcoming George Clinton Biopic Be About?

Allegedly, the script for the upcoming biopic will be based on George Clinton’s memoir Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You? If they really stick to the source material, the upcoming biopic film will likely follow the funk iconic’s roots in 1940s North Carolina and his rise to musical fame as the leader of Parliament-Funkadelic.

George Clinton is widely known as the “Godfather of Funk”, and for good reason. Clinton started his music career in doo-wop groups as a teenager before becoming a songwriter for Motown. After finding some success in soul music, Clinton formed the music collective Parliament-Funkadelic. He’s known for his highly influential musical and aesthetic style, which draws inspiration from (and influenced) Afrofuturism, psychedelia, and surrealist humor under the umbrella of funk music.

Currently, there is no news of when the film will be released, nor is there additional information about the cast of the film. It doesn’t look like production has begun quite yet, either. Hopefully, we’ll get to see this likely dazzling biopic in 2025. Stay tuned for more information!
