Singing her song “Ego,” fans couldn’t get enough of Halsey’s rocking performance. “Halsey is such a crazy good performer,” one fan tweeted. “Halsey ate that,” another added.
It’s no surprise that Halsey made sure their performance was unforgettable. The singer, who last took the VMAs stage with The Chainsmokers in 2016, teased big things hours ahead of the performance.
“vmas gonna go insanely hard lol wow,” Halsey tweeted.
The singer has previously been nominated for 13 VMAs. They won the Best K-Pop moonman in 2019 for “Boy with Luv,” their hit collaboration with BTS.
Halsey Is Gearing Up for Their Album’s Release
The VMAs come amid a busy time for the singer, who recently released “Ego,” the fourth single off of their forthcoming album, which is due out Oct. 25.
Back in August, Halsey released a trailer for The Great Impersonator.
“I really thought this album might be the last one I ever made,” Halsey said in the video.
Halsey has been open up their health struggles, previously revealing that they suffer from both lupus and a rare T-cell disorder. Their illnesses, Halsey said, made them “start thinking about ways it could’ve all been different.”
And thus, the concept for the album was born.
“What if this isn’t how it all went down?” Halsey questioned. “Eighteen-year-old Ashley becomes Halsey in 2014. What if I debuted in the early 2000s? The ’90s? The ’80s? The ’70s?”
More questions followed from there, with Halsey wondering, “Am I still Halsey every time, in every timeline? Do I still get sick? Do I become a mom? Am I happy? Lonely? Have I done enough? Have I told the truth?”
“I spent half my life being someone else,” they said. “I never stopped to ask myself, ‘If it all ended right now, is this a person you’d be proud to leave behind? Is it even you?’”
The Great Impersonator is due out Oct. 25.
