Like so many of us in the year 2024, Jelly Roll has a love-hate relationship with technology. The “I Am Not Okay” singer frequently goes dark on social media. He has been candid about dealing with disparaging comments about his weight and frankly, the endless scrolling of it all. The Grammy nominee has decided to prioritize his family over screen time for the rest of 2024. And he is taking extreme measures to ensure he doesn’t stray from that.

Watch Jelly Roll Throw His Phone into the Cumberland River
In a TikTok post made Wednesday (Nov. 27), the country superstar’s wife, Bunnie Xo, grandly announced “the Annual Jelly Roll Gets Rid of His Phone Saga.”
The camera then pans to a phone showing the “Need a Favor” singer on FaceTime. The next shot is of him standing near the Cumberland River on the Shelby Street walkway in Nashville.
“You know how I throw my phone out all the time?” Jelly says. “Momma, I love you. Bailey, I love you… I’m a little tipsy. I look forward to spending my next couple of months with just y’all with no outside interference.”
And with that, the “Son of a Sinner” hitmaker (born Jason DeFord) hurls his phone into the vast depths of the Cumberland River.
“Freedom, baby!” he shouts.
In just three hours, the post had amassed more than 60,000 likes. “This just shows how much this man has his priorities in check and wants his family time and nothing else!!!!!” one TikTok user commented.
Fans Thought He Was Joking
In his own TikTok post, Jelly Roll addressed his “unhealthy relationship” with social media while expressing gratitude for a successful Beautifully Broken tour. (He wrapped up the tour Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Nashville.)
“So I’m getting on here to tell y’all I’m taking a break,” he said. “It’s been a crazy couple of years and I love y’all so much. I’m throwing this phone out the window tonight. I’m going to go phoneless for a few months.”
One user commented on Bunnie Xo’s post that they “thought that throwing the phone out the window was a metaphor.”
Bunnie replied below. “You kno this man is dramatic,” wrote the Dumb Blonde podcast host.
