Kelly Clarkson delivered some positive energy to her audience earlier this week with her cover of “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield.

During her Kellyoke segment, Clarkson crushed a cover of the early-2000s pop hit. Her vocal delivery was nearly a perfect match for Bedingfield’s in the opening verse. However, she let loose and showed the power of her pipes during the inspiring chorus. She sang every word of the inspirational song like she meant it with her entire being.

“Unwritten” was the title track from Bedingfield’s 2004 debut album. It was also the third single from the album in the U.K. and second in the United States. Additionally, it landed at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, giving the English artist her first hit in the States.

She co-wrote the song with Danielle Brisebois and Wayne Rodrigues. According to Songfacts, she wrote the song for her brother as a gift on his 14th birthday. “It was a very personal song. I feel like his life was reminding me about how people make us feel like we have to have it all figured out already,” she said. “We have to already choose what college we’re going to go to, what subject we’re going to study, and we don’t even know much about life yet.” Overall, she said, the song is about “just not worrying.”

The song seems fitting for Clarkson right now. Recently, she finalized her divorce, left The Voice, and moved across the country. After more than two decades in Los Angeles, she and her children relocated to New York.

She couldn’t have planned that move years ago. It was something she had to do when the time was right. In a recent interview, Clarkson revealed that moving her life and The Kelly Clarkson Show to a new city was exactly what she needed.

The singer said that she feels like she is in a good place both professionally and personally after the move. “I feel like a weight has lifted,” she said. “The thing I’m most excited about … is just showing up to work smiling and actually meaning it.”
