While U.S. music festivals Coachella and Bonnaroo announce their musical line-ups, and U.K. music festival Glastonbury sells out without announcing any headliners, Miami’s Langerado Music Festival has been cancelled, the first large-scale music festival in the U.S. to succumb to current economic conditions.
In what would have been its seventh year, promoters were preparing to hold the March 6-8 event at a new venue, Bicentennial Park. Confirmed performers included Death Cab For Cutie, Snoop Dogg, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, Dashboard Confessional, Broken Social Scene, Girl Talk, Thievery Corporation, Flogging Molly, Gym Class Heroes, Zac Brown Band, Matisyahu, Disco Biscuits, Umphrey’s McGee, Public Enemy and Robert Randolph and the Family Band, among others. Even last week, the concert added Modest Mouse, which, in the past, has brought many acts to South Florida for their only appearance of the year. Yesterday however, organizers cancelled the concert citing “sluggish ticket sales.”
In the announcement, festival Co-Promoter Ethan Schwartz explained, “Unfortunately, during these difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, it’s become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events.” Last year’s four-day festival drew 25,000 attendees per day and grossed $4.3 million.
