In late June, Neil Young canceled all of the remaining dates of his 2024 Love Earth Tour with Crazy Horse, citing unspecified illness in the band. Since then, Young confirmed that he’ll be performing at the 2024 Farm Aid concert on September 21 in Saratoga Springs, New York, and now he’s lined up another performance.

The folk-rock legend will be performing along with his former Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young bandmate Stephen Stills at the 2024 edition of the Harvest Moon: A Gathering benefit concert. The event will take place October 5 at the Painted Turtle camp in Lake Hughes, California.

The concert will raise money for two charities—The Painted Turtle and The Bridge School. The Painted Turtle, which was founded by late actor Paul Newman, offers a free camp experience to chronically ill children and their families. The Bridge School, which was co-founded by Young’s late ex-wife Pegi, is an educational facility for young people with physical and speech impairments. Neil, of course, headlined a series of annual acoustic concerts benefiting The Bridge School for decades in Mountain View, California.
General admission tickets for the Harvest Moon: A Gathering show will go on sale this Friday, September 6. VIP tickets also will be sold. More information is available at HarvestMoonGathering.com.
In addition to Young and Stills, the concert will feature a performance by the marimba ensemble Masanga. Other artists also will be added to the lineup.
This marks the first time Young and Stills will perform at the same event since they teamed up at the 2023 edition of Stills’ Light Up the Attic benefit concert. That event raises money for the Autism Speaks charity.
Comments from The Painted Turtle’s Executive Director
April Tani, executive director of the Painted Turtle camp, shared details about the Harvest Moon concert in a press statement, as shared by RollingStone.com.
“This event not only brings together amazing musicians and families but also raises vital funds for two organizations committed to changing lives,” said Tani. “It’s a day of music, fun, and philanthropy—what could be better?”
She also revealed that Young and Stills will play individual set, and will be “joined by other talented [as-yet-unannounced] performers.”
Tani added, “The event will culminate with a sunset performance, creating a magical atmosphere for all who attend. The festival-like day will also feature family-friendly activities, including face painting, food trucks, and much more.”
About the Previous Harvest Moon: A Gathering Concert
The first Harvest Moon: A Gathering concert was held in September 2019. That show’s lineup featured Young, Norah Jones, Father John Misty, and Masanga.
Neil played an acoustic set at the show that ended with a finale performance of his 1992 song “Harvest Moon,” joined by the event’s other performers.
Young Other Touring Plans
In a recent Zoom conference for members of his Neil Young Archives website, Young explained why he decided to cut short his 2024 tour with Crazy Horse.
“I just woke up one morning on the bus and I said, ‘I can’t do this, I gotta stop,’” he said. “And it was like, I felt sick when I thought of going onstage. My body was telling me, ‘You gotta stop.’ So I listened to my body.”
Young said some Crazy Horse members also fell ill during the trek. He added, “Crazy Horse will be back, God willing, and we’ll play more. But in the meantime, I have a lot of friends that I play with.”
Neil then reported that he was planning to scheduled some new theater shows that will feature him accompanied by several members of Promise of the Real. None of those concerts have been confirmed yet.
